Recreation
South Portland is home to the Maine Mall, the largest shopping, dining, and entertainment complex in the State. Over 140 retail stores, food establishments, and theater venues draw in 13 million visitors annually. The large number of stores include major big box retailers as well as upscale designers and casual boutiques.
Spring Point Marina, located at the entrance to Portland Harbor, is the State's largest full-service marina. 250 slips, a full-service on-site boatyard, and quaint restaurant make the marina a popular summer destination among locals and visitors. The marina seasonally hosts many fishing tournaments for tuna, shark, striper, and bluefish.
Southern Maine Community College, located on a beautiful peninsula with well-maintained sports fields, is Maine's largest community college. SMCC has partnerships with community and business leaders to offer students excellent opportunities and prepare them for transfer to university or a technical career. Two other post-secondary schools in South Portland include Kaplan University and New England Bible College.
Adjacent to SMCC is Willard Beach, a stunning sandy beach with views of the Casco Bay Islands and harbor entrance ship channel. The beach offers swimming and recreational boating and is just minutes from an artisan bakery, Scratch Baking Co.
Spring Point Ledge Light, also adjacent to SMCC, is a historic lighthouse built to warn mariners of a hazardous ledge in Portland Harbor. The unique lighthouse, with a granite breakwater path and views of the Islands, attracts daily visits by locals and summer vacationers alike.
Numerous lands are stewarded to provide parks and miles of walking, hiking, and biking trails. The expansive lands have views of woodlands, ponds, and Portland Harbor. Bug Light Park is across from the harbor and Portland's skyline with a beautiful promenade, boat launch, and Portland Breakwater Light, a historic lighthouse.
